atr is a one of a kind reggae collective based in parkside brooklyn. founded by scrillamatic and kg, at their core they are just group of friends who hang out in the park and sing, all day. the routine is simple, they meet up at their favorite hangout spot on the side of a lake, play beats off of a beat up but loud stereo, and belt out lyrics out into the air. sometimes a crowd gathers but it’s usually just a few like minded artists sharing their love for music. natives of the west indies, but coming of age in brooklyn, they have a very unique perspective on life and the world we live in. with subject matters varying from traditional roots medleys, smoked out ganja anthems to gangsta badman chants to heartfelt soulful ballads telling tales of the ghetto and more, they have a lot to say.

the mighty flames were a crack bunch of cameroonian musicians, drawn to nigeria by the heavy funk sounds booming across the border like musical moths. for a short time in the late sentries they ‘owned’ port harcourt, destroying dancefloors with an incendiary sound that burned so heavily that it was phosphorescent. metalik funk band is the band at their most deadly.

marcel vogels intimate friends label turns to an unknown entity for their next release, giving dear earth no less than a full album to run with as a first outing. that s a strong statement of conviction, and the label are right to be so bold as dear earth shows off the kind of inventive, sample-rich approach that makes your ears prick up in an instant. supposedly hailing from london, this mysterious figure has been trawling through all kinds of ephemera and stewing it into a soulful, meandering body of work that touches on house, downtempo broken beat and more besides

italian producer reekee has laid down soulful grooves for roots underground and wrong notes over the past year, and now he surfaces once again with this sumptuous turn for uzuri. bal-era is the perfect lead track, cultivating a classic deep house mood with passionate keys and synth lines, setting the scene for glenn underground to swoop in for an invigorating remix rich with saxophone goodness. black tobacco on the flip is a more subdued affair, but no less refined in its use of piano at the forefront of the mix, and then quartal ramps up the synth work without losing that infectious, soulful mood.

2016 repress ... *in love again* first surfaced as part of red rackems *all i ever wanted ep* in 2010 becoming an underground smash. soulful vocal samples, and beautiful detroit strings work uniquly in the wolf style that we come to expect. the new remix is uptempo, with skippy drums, and a deep warm feel. this tweaked mix is made for underground dancefloors. the b side features a brand new track entitled *latin techno*, which combines filtered chopped up loops layered over huge beats. another successful release for red rackem and a fine return to form for wolf music.

newcastle-based producer traela makes his first appearance on wax with this on-point work out for hhatri, a london based label who have previously been happily working with the likes of soichi terada. there is definitely a sense of feel-good optimism and kinked drum programming hovering over this ep, especially on hanging over a river. you know i can hide also stands out with its strafing bass lick and spacescraping synth rolls, but the script gets flipped for ep closer uyokuthola as tribal percussion meets with an ambient atmosphere for a most engrossing end result.

ondon-based duo jamka return with inter alia, the latest evidence of their patient, intimate relationship with their analogue machines. from the start there’s a sense of event – we encounter clear, interlaced electronic textures, powerful analogue drones and well-placed beats. the tracks aren’t soundscapes so much as fertile electronic soundfields. patemp continuously expands in an incredibly subtle but powerful way and shows that jamka’s technical skills don’t preclude an emotional touch. on the tight and minimal anazmo, the coiled energy bears traces of minimal techno and radical electronica, but it’s beyond either of these. while the album passes quickly, it’s full of detail and the thoughtfulness and craft that have gone into it are evident. dwa offers the chance to appreciate the flow and the sheen of its analogue textures – the modernist romance of the power line hum and its promise of technological-cultural progress. jamka are known for their dynamic live performances and this energy is almost tangible on derazor. the stately igora is a strong, bold close to the album, offering surprises right till the end. the sharp, metallic details ripple through the mix and an anthemic sequence shines through. inter alia makes clear that jamka are worthy inheritors of slovakia’s proud late modernist traditions of radical architecture and electronic music. this is a work of craft that demands respect and repeated listening.

having done such wonderful work alongside wolf muller on the sound of glades album, cass makes a welcome return with an expansive album release on emotional response. the german producer s ambient tendencies blossom here, occasionally meeting with laconic drums as on u but primarily dealing in huge swathes of melody. djs will want to hold out for the dramatic pulse of ann, where a more pronounced drum set makes for one of the album s most club-ready moments. theres a strong variety of tones and moods across youth sessions, from the strafing arpeggios of running to the bliss-out shapeless swirl of prismatic prolog, and this ensures that the album will not dull with repeated listens.

katsunori sawa has been with the label for pretty much four years now with solo projects as well as joint ventures (besides the aforementioned bokeh, he’s also part of steven porter with his brother in arms yuji kondo with whom he also runs their own 10 label). his musical career reaches back another few years when he was writing and producing under eoc (short for enormous o clock), including an album for ai records.

after a longer than usual break gamm enterprises is back on black plastic but more important... we got a brand new design! for those who don t know gamm has been delivering dance music of the blacker kind for almost 15 years but always with the same look. basically, a visual facelift was long overdue. but we think you ll feel it as much as we do and it really works beautifully with our musical ideology. so, for the (new) premier release we got an incognito producer that is rumoured to come from a small town in mexico. having finally agreed for a brief skype call he appeared wearing none other than a bright luchador mask and giving one-word answers with a strong mexican accent. no matter how convincing that was we still can t help thinking his name sounds pretty close to another producer that is to put it mildly, pretty hyped at the moment. musically the ep is ranging from percussive carnival disco (carnival in manchester) to brazilian fusion grooves (jazz in italics) and independent disco/funk (dues paid fast). either way you ll definitely find something that will work your party. gamm is back and back with musical vengeance!

dublin based disco imprint fatty fatty phonographics return with the 4th instalment of their downtownsounds classics series, this time throwing three stone-cold classics onto one 12, all given the re-edit treatment by in house producers pablo and shoey. voiced by leroy burgess, with drums by hip hop legend marley marl and production by the aleem brothers, release yourself was a huge across-the-board anthem in the clubs of nyc on its release in 1984. the lads have superglued elements of both the vocal and dub sides together for an epic end of night take on this beloved classic. the b side features two under appreciated classics from the pen of one billy nichols, a man known for his work with west end records (the levan mixed give your body up to the music ) and the funky band of brothers that was bt express. on take me... nichols hooked up with disco master patrick adams for an emotional, string drenched disco belter that has found favour with the likes of dimitri from paris, floating points and hunee. while dance if off is a wonky proto acid-disco trip beloved of rahaan and eric duncan of rub n tug. with copies going for over 300 euros, you can do your bank account and your dancefloor a favour here.

following on from 2015 s mammoth release, work them records call in flexxseal boss christopher joseph, parisian duo behzad & amarou and label founder spencer parker to remix caiazzo the dredge ep. punchy kicks and eerie drones initiate christopher josephs recreation of lowbrow as numerous dusky atmospherics ebb in and out of the mix. next up, renowned concrete paris residents behzad & amarou deliver a mesmerising slice of techno with intricate percussion, floating pads and metallic aesthetics in their remix of dredge. on the b-side, work thems spencer parker presents two versions of refraction that emphasise ample low-end, sinister whirrs and an undulating synth that will continue to shake clubs throughout the future.
